Beu & Maxwell (1990): Chapter 17; p. 376; pl. 53 a,b,c.
Classification: Scissurellidae
Description: Diameter 0.9-1.2 mm, protoconch with prominent axial sculpture; teleoconch spire flat or depressed, umbilicus narrow or well developed. Sculpture of prominent axial costae; spiral threads or cords variably developed, as prominent as axials in some species. Selenizone prominent, above periphery; slit deep, open at margin of outer lip.
Comparison: Sinezona Finlay, 1926 is similar in shape to Scissurella but has the selenizone closed at the outer lip, leaving a slot some distance behind the outer lip; specimens with the outer lip damaged are difficult to distinguish from those of Scissurella. Anatoma Woodward, 1859 (= Schizotrochus Monterosato, 1877) is higher-spired than Scissurella, has the selenizone at or close to the peripheral keel, and has a protoconch that is smooth except for fine anastomosing reticulation. It is now classified in its own family, Anatomidae. Modern scissurellids are recorded from very shallow waters down to abyssal depths; Scissurella itself ranges from the intertidal down to the upper bathyal zone.
Distribution: Teurian-Recent, New Zealand; cosmopolitan, recorded from Late Cretaceous-Recent.
