Beu & Maxwell (1990): Chapter 16; p. 347; pl. 47 h,i.

Synonymy: Tugali pliocenica Finlay 1926b, p. 227

Classification: Fissurellidae

Description: Moderate-sized for genus (18-21 mm long), a narrow boat-shaped "limpet" with hooked, backward-directed apex 0.1- 0.25 of total length from posterior end, relatively tall so posterior lateral outline is weakly concave, anterior strongly convex. A high, narrow costa extending down anterior crest from apex divides into 3 lower costellae, leading down to shallow sulcus in anterior margin; other sculpture of many low, relatively wide, closely spaced radial costellae, crossed by considerably narrower, well raised, commarginal ridges. Margin finely crenulate.

Comparison: Tugali pliocenica is smaller, higher and narrower, and more closely sculptured than the Haweran and living T. elegans but, like T. elegans, has only a low median anterior costa. Most other fossil species are smaller and have a more prominent, more intricately subdivided anterior median costa than T. pliocenica. The other living species, T. suteri Thiele, is smaller and markedly shorter and more inflated than T. pliocenica.

Distribution: Nukumaruan-Castlecliffian; "Castlecliff blue clays (Castlecliffian)", type; common in offshore, current-swept facies (notably Tainui Shellbed) at Castlecliff, Wanganui (Castlecliffian), less common in Hawke's Bay in blue-grey siltstone (Nukumaruan).
