Revised descriptions of New Zealand Cenozoic Mollusca from Beu and Maxwell (1990) |
(Pl. 42j): largest paratype (with thicker outer lip than holotype), "Petane", hillside north of Petane Pa, north of mouth of Esk River, north of Napier, Hawke's Bay, Nukumaruan (TM6830, GNS) |
Beu & Maxwell (1990): Chapter 15; p. 326; pl. 42 j.
Synonymy: Marginella kirki Marwick 1924e, p. 324; M. (Volvarina) kirki
Classification: Marginellidae
Description: Large for New Zealand species of the family (11.5 mm high), tall and narrow, with low spire of convex outline but tall for New Zealand members of genus, and with very long, narrow, weakly inflated last whorl. Exterior smooth and polished, protoconch and suture hidden by callus. Aperture long and narrow; outer lip thickened, with shallow sinus at top and about 25 low, rounded nodules on inner edge; inner lip thin over upper 0.7 height, thickened below, bearing 4 prominent, narrow plaits and a much weaker 5th plait or denticle above, not extending far inside aperture.
Comparison: Serrata kirki is sympatric with S. marwicki, which differs in its lower spire, more inflated last whorl, and weaker outer-lip nodules; the two are much larger than most other New Zealand Cenozoic marginellids. Serrata flemingi (Waiauan, Greymouth) is smaller than S. kirki and has a taller spire; both species differ from other New Zealand marginellids in having a fifth, weak denticle anterior to the four columellar plaits.
Distribution: Nukumaruan; "clays below limestone, Petane", i.e., hillside north of Petane Pa, north of mouth of Esk River, central Hawke's Bay (type); uncommon at most localities in blue-grey siltstone in central Hawke's Bay, not uncommon at a few localities (notably mudstone in a road cut on Ashcott Road at the north end of Pukeora Hill, overlying Te Aute Limestone, near Waipukurau).
