Type species of Kaweka Marwick, 1931

Classification: Terebridae

Description: Small for family (10-19 mm high), tall and narrowly fusiform, although very short and wide for family, with spire only about twice height of aperture. Sculpture of single narrow, weakly defined, angling spiral cord at periphery, and at mid- height on spire whorls, and low, wide spiral cord below suture, both bearing small, sharp nodules where crossed by low, narrow, widely spaced axial costae, 11-13 per whorl; costae die out shortly below periphery on last whorl. Aperture narrowly oval, relatively large, produced below into a short, widely open canal, deeply notched anteriorly and so forming low fasciole marked off by prominent, narrow ridge. Protoconch dome-shaped, of 1 smooth whorl, with a large rounded apex.

Comparison: Adult shells of Kaweka fulta have slightly taller spires and shorter anterior canals than Marwick's (1931) immature holotype. The type species (the only reasonably common species of the genus) is easily recognised by its very low spire for a terebrid, its medially angled spire whorls, and its sharp little peripheral nodules. Other named species in Kaweka are a little narrower.

Distribution: Opoitian; Mangatarehu Stream, 2 km south of Te Karaka, Gisborne (type); uncommon at many localities in the Gisborne district and in the Wairoa district, northern Hawke's Bay, in inner-mid shelf, soft-bottom facies with diverse Mollusca.
