Beu & Maxwell (1990): Chapter 14; p. 274; pl. 31 b,e,h.

Synonymy: Acanthochitona (Notoplax) n. sp. C, Beu & Maxwell 1990, p. 274, pl. 31b, e, h.

Classification: Acanthochitonidae

Description: Similar to Notoplax mariae (Nukumaruan-Recent; Pl. 44a, d, h) but reaching a larger size (median valve to 14 mm wide, 9 mm long), having markedly thicker and heavier valves, all valves are a little shorter and wider, the tegmental granules are more nearly oval or subcircular, and the tegmentum of the very large anterior valve (10.0 mm wide, 6.5 mm long) is more weakly lobate and bears lower radial ridges than that of N. mariae. The large size, thick shell, and very shallow-water environment suggest that this species may be more closely related to the living intertidal species N. violacea (Quoy & Gaimard) than to N. mariae.

Comparison: See description.

Distribution: Waipipian or perhaps Mangapanian, Middle Waipara River at end of ridge opposite "The Deans", North Canterbury, fairly common in shallow-water sandstone with diverse Mollusca (see also Chiton n. sp. aff. glaucus, below); we have not seen similar specimens from any other locality.
