Description: Distinguished by the very slender uniserial test with elongate cylindrical chambers and a distinct spiral twist; six to eight or more fine costae and an elongate radiate aperture which is rarely found preserved.
Distribution: Waiauan? Tongaporutuan to Nukumaruan.
Comment: Broken segments of similar forms occasionally found in the Altonian and Southland Series are probably early chambers of M. subtetragona. Seldom found intact and the character of the whole test from juvenile to adult chambers is difficult to establish from broken segments. Finlay separated the Pliocene forms in New Zealand as Nodosaria sinalata (Fig. 23 :12) on the grounds that they had more numerous costae than tosta. Specimens from the Tongaporutuan more resemble M. tosta but there is a tendency for Pliocene populations to be more slender and more delicately costate. These two species are here considered to be synonyms.
