Description: Distinguished by the large, broad, glossy test, moderately convex dorsally, 5-7 chambers in last whorl with toothplates projecting into umbilicus; aperture extending from periphery back under the toothplates.
Distribution: Whaingaroan to Southland Series?.
Comment: Several related species lacking a primary peripheral aperture, are included here under Hanzawaia: H. jugosa (Waipawan to Bortonian), H. apposita (Mangaorapan to Whaingaroan), H. turgida (upper part Lower Lwh to Altonian), H. scopos (Whaingaroan to Altonian), H. galerus (Otaian to Altonian) all of Finlay, 1940; also H. bertheloti (d'Orb). Discopulvinulina is now regarded as an invalid genus and unavailable. Discorbinella, with its type species D. montereyensis Cushman and Martin, has a primary peripheral aperture in the plane of coiling, with secondary apertures under toothplates and is an unsuitable genus for this group.
