Cibicides molestus Hornibrook

.

Reference: Hornibrook, Brazier & Strong 1989, p.89, Fig. 23:11a-b (Holotype).

Synonymy: 1961, N.Z. Geol. Surv. paleont. bull. 34: 163, pl. 25, fig. 478, 479, 483 (Cibicidoides).

Description: Distinguished by the strongly planoconvex or biconvex tightly coiled test with a coarsely perforate domed uncoiled dorsal side; flatter ventrally with markedly sinuous radial sutures, often with a small umbo; aperture extends only for a very short distance backwards along the periphery.

Comparison: Cibicides temperatus Vella and topotypes of the closely similar C. brevoralis Carter (Janjukian, Oligocene, Southeast Australia) both differ in having a distinctly longer extension of the aperture along the periphery.

Distribution: Bortonian to Waipipian.

Comment: Last appearance is adopted as the most useful benthic foraminiferal datum for the top of Waipipian.
