Amphistegina spp.

Reference: Hornibrook, Brazier & Strong 1989, p.84, Figs 17:20, 22:31.

Distribution: Mangaorapan to Waipipian. An early occurrence in the Eyre Sand Group (Mangaorapan or Heretaungan) was recorded as Amphistegina eyrensis n. sp. by Larsen (1978, N.Z. jl. geol. geophys. 21(4): 501-504, fig. 1-7). Amphistegina next appears in the Kaiatan and is common in suitable shelf facies throughout Upper Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene. The youngest well established records seem to be from the Waipipian in the Te Aute Limestone Group in northern Hawkes Bay. Specimens from the Te Waka limestone sheet (Mangapanian) may possibly have been reworked from older strata.

Comment: Much taxonomic confusion surrounds Amphistegina. Many species names have been proposed and their full stratigraphic potential in New Zealand is yet to be realised. See A. aucklandica Karrer (= A. madagascarensis d'Orb, fide Hayward & Buzas, 1979, Smithson. contr. paleobiol. 36: 39, pl. 4, fig. 48, 49; includes A. campbelli); A. campbelli Karrer (= A. mamilla fide Larsen, 1978, Rev. Espan. Micropal. 10(2): 224; probably a synonym of A. aucklandica, Hornibrook, this volume); A. mamilla Fichtell & Moll (Larsen 1978, pp. 217-243, pl. 1, fig. 8, 9, 11, 12; Clifdenian); A. hauerina d'Orb (Chaproniere, 1984, Bur. Min. Res. Geol. Geophys. bull. 188, pp. 23, 23, pl. 3, fig. 3, 5, pl. 7, fig. 19-22; Clifdenian to Waiauan; equals A. mamilla of Larsen?); A. papillosa Said (Hayward, 1980, Tane 126: 184-186, fig. 4, Recent, allochthonous?). The specimen illustrated on Fig. 17:20, (1.22 mm), is from the Deborah Volcanic Formation, Kakanui, Lower Whaingaroan, and that on Fig. 22: 31 is from the Waikuku Limestone, Waiauan.
