Description: Markedly plano-conical, with an average four to four and a half chambers in final whorl, periphery distinctly keeled, spiral side flat to gently convex, spiral sutures strongly recurved, sinistrally coiling, involute side usually umbilicate, aperture distinctly arched.

Distribution: Kapitean.

Comment: The taxonomic status of Globorotalia conomiozea is controversial. Scott (1979, Marine micropal. 4: 341-361) regards it as a conical member of G. conoidea populations. The position adopted here is that G. conomiozea morphotypes with four to four and a half chambers in the final whorl, define a recognisable biostratigraphic zone which approximately coincides with Chron 5 and with the Kapitean, although its base is gradational. G. conomiozea morphotypes persist as occasional variants in the zone of G. sphericomiozea populations. Secondarily thickened specimens are often difficult to distinguish from G. conoidea s.s.
