Description: Distinguished by the stout subspherical form with three subspherical chambers in the final whorl; sutures deeply incised; often two lipped apertures with or without bullae; surfaces coarsely porous and reticulate. Individuals with apertural bullae are often separated as Globigerinatheca barri.

Distribution: Topmost Porangan (rare, atypical), Bortonian to Runangan.

Comment: Finlay & Marwick used the LAD of G. index to define the top of the Runangan Stage. One of the dominant planktic species in Middle to Upper Eocene faunas in the South Pacific region. Its LAD is a useful working datum at or slightly below the Eocene-Oligocene boundary.
